Watching the huge green man struggle with a furious golden chii was a rather comical sight. Aliâquiiâs Chosen chittered angrily while sinking its claws deep into Vruhagâs arm. That had to hurt. Emerald green blood seeped from the scratches, a shade darker than his skin. I shouldnât have been surprised that alien blood wasnât red, but seeing it felt surreal. Funnily enough, it wasnât even the strangest aspect about the situation.
They are a good match for each other, Aliâquii said in my head. She sounded amused.
âAre you done saying hello to your Chosen?â I asked. I sounded a little annoyed, but I hoped she wouldnât notice. Seeing her so in sync with her mate while struggling to communicate with Vruhag had been frustrating.
We only just began, she said with a chuckle. The welcoming ritual lasts for days. But we reached a good point to take a break. How are you getting on with your Chosen?
âHe can understand me but I canât understand him. Can you translate for us?â
She shot a pointed look at the two males, who were still fighting. Vruhag growled at the chii male, flashing his tusks. Besides his size, they were the most alien feature about him. Well, and the green skin, the fact he only had four fingers, and the pointed ears. He was humanoid, but no human man could be that bulky. He was layers and layers upon hard muscles; a predator born for battle. He was clearly holding back, not using his full strength as he tried to pry the chii off his arm. Thick drops of green blood splattered onto the forest ground, but Vruhag didnât even seem to notice.
Several thick scars marred his chest. Newer gashes, only just closed, covered his arms and torso. Heâd seen worse fights before.
A roar in the distance made everyone freeze. Something was out there. For a moment, Iâd forgotten that I was on a hostile planet where not everyone was as welcoming as the chii.
We should go inside, Aliâquii said.
âWill he fit?â
Thereâs a cave below the tree. Itâll be big enough for the two of you. Although you might have to snuggle close together if you want to lie down.
She sounded amused by the thought. I wasnât. I didnât want to snuggle with this stranger. I wanted him to take me home. I wanted to ignore how good he smelled. How attractive he looked despite the alienness. How I had the strange urge to get to know him. To curl up in his arms.
I pushed the thought away. All this talk of mates and Chosen was affecting me. I didnât need a mate. I needed a spaceship pilot.
âLead the way,â I told Aliâquii and shot a look at the males. Theyâd stopped fighting, although they were still glaring at each other. Blood was dripping down Vruhagâs arm. The chii had done some real damage. I hoped Vruhag would heal more quickly than humans.
Aliâquii grasped my ear with her paw for support, her tails wrapping around my neck once again.
